The veteran journalist has been with CNN since 2008, having first come on board as an anchor for CNNMoney.com and a reporter for CNN and CNN International. She became a New York-based correspondent in 2012 and co-anchor of CNN Newsroom in 2017.Harlow was also one of the original hosts of CNN This Morning, along with Don LemonandKaitlan Collins. The short-lived morning show was launched in 2022 and cancelled in February 2024, nearly one year after Lemon was ousted following his controversial on-air remarks about presidential candidate Nikki Haley.

Prior to joining CNN, Harlow worked for both Forbes.com Video Network and NY1. She also earned a law degree from Yale in 2022 and has won a Gracie Award for her work in investigative journalism.

Why is Poppy Harlow leaving CNN?

Harlow announced her departure from CNN in an internal memo sent to colleagues on Friday, April 26. “Mark [Thompson], Amy [Entelis], and the CNN management team have been wonderful and have given me the space to make this decision. I am very grateful to them,” she wrote. “CNN gave me the opportunity to travel across this country and around the world — often at the worst of times, but when humanity also shows the best of itself.”

She continued: “There’s been plenty written about what’s wrong with journalism, and the challenges our industry faces. And it does. But there is also so much right with it. At the heart of everything we do is the pursuit of truth — it is the core of CNN. I remain CNN’s biggest fan and I’ll be watching and cheering you on every day.”

News of her exit comes shortly after CNN This Morningwas effectively cancelled in February 2024. The morning show struggled to find its stride and experienced a lot of turnover in its two-year run. Lemon was fired in April 2023, while Collinsdeparted a few weeks later to anchor the network’s 9 p.m. hour. Harlow was then joined by CNN White House correspondentPhil Mattingly, but the show still lagged in ratings and was axed as part of the network’s decision to focus on straight news coverage. Following its cancellation, Mattingly was madethe network’s chief domestic correspondent. Harlow was reportedly offered a new role as well, but ultimately turned it down.

Mark Thompson, who replaced Chris Lich as CEO in August 2023, released a statement about her exit, which read: “Poppy is a unique talent who combines formidable reporting and interviewing prowess with a human touch that audiences have always responded to … She’s been a wonderful colleague at CNN, and we know she will have much success in her future endeavors.”

Amy Entelis, Executive Vice President for Talent and Content Development, added: “Poppy leaves CNN after more than 16 memorable years, thousands of hours in the anchor chair and hundreds of reports from the field … Poppy is a brilliant journalist who sets the standard for reporting with compassion and humanity, and we will miss her.”
