Homemade Dog Treats (3 Ingredients!) (1)

This holiday cookie season, we can’t forget about our furry friends!

I don’t know about your dogs, but our sweet elderly pup, Fiona, has been sniffing eagerly around the kitchen all season long as we’ve been baking up a storm. So I decided to whip up a simple batch of pet-safe dog treats to keep on hand for her so that she wouldn’t be left out of the sweet cookie fun.

After a bit of research, I decided to play it as safe as possible and limit the ingredient list to three basic AKC-approved ingredients for dogs — natural peanut butter, oat flour and bananas. Simply mix all three together until you have a dough that is firm enough to roll out. Cut out your desired shapes, like these cute little dog bones. Bake until crispy, and drizzle with a little extra peanut butter if you’d like. Then get ready to make your pup’s day. ♡♡♡

Lol, Fiona was convinced she won the lottery with these peanut butter cookies and jumps and twirls and wags her tail a million miles per hour each time we bring another one out for her to enjoy. So hopefully your pup is a big fan too! Enjoy!

Homemade Dog Treat Ingredients

Here are a few brief notes about the dog treat ingredients you will need to make this recipe:

  • Oat flour:This will serve as our base for the dough to give the cookies their structure. You can either purchase store-bought oat flour or make your own by pulsing old-fashioned oats in a blender until they reach a floury consistency. Feel free to add more oat flour as needed if the dough is too sticky.
  • Natural peanut butter:It’s no secret that pups love peanut butter! Just please be sure to usenatural peanut butter made with 100% peanuts for this recipe for dog safety. (It’s especially important not to use peanut butter that contains xylitol, which can be poisonous for dogs.)
  • Bananas:Bananas are safe for dogs in moderation and add delicious flavor and texture to these treats.

How To Make Dog Treats

Full instructions about how to make dog treats are included in the recipe below, but here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:

  • Adjust the ingredient ratios as needed. Different types of peanut butter or ripeness levels of bananas can yield different amounts of moisture in the dough. So if it seems too soft or sticky to roll out, just add in some extra oat flour as needed. Or if the dough is too stiff, you can add in some extra water.
  • Use oat flour to roll out the dough. Please also use oat flour when rolling out the dough instead of all-purpose flour, which can be harmful for some dogs. Or if you want to skip the extra flour altogether, you can roll out the dough between two sheets of parchment paper.
  • Roll into whatever shapes you would like!I used these cute little dog bone cookie cutters, but feel free to use whatever other cookie cutters you love best. Or you can also just use a pizza slicer to cut the dough into basic rectangles.
  • Store safely. These cookies can be stored in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months.

A Note About Safety

We have consulted the American Kennel Club for safety information about each of the three ingredients included in this recipe, but we are obviously not experts. So if you have any concerns or your pet has specific dietary needs, please consult your vet before trying these cookies. ♡ We recommend no more than 1 cookie per day. Enjoy!

Description

This 3-ingredient homemade dog treats recipe is quick and easy to make and cut into whatever shapes you love.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 3/4 cup (160g) oat flour
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 medium bananas)
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter, plus extra for drizzling if you’d like

Instructions

  1. Prep oven and baking sheet. Heat oven to 300°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment.
  2. Mix the dough. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until the mixture is evenly-mixed.
  3. Roll and cut. Roll the dough out on a lightly-floured surface (using either extra oat flour or whole wheat flour) to ¼-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your desired shapes and transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheet. Re-roll and cut out any remaining dough until it has all been used.
  4. Bake. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire baking rack to cool to room temperature.
  5. Serve. Drizzle with melted peanut butter, if desired. Serve to your dog and enjoy!

One of my dogs is allergic to oats. What kind of flour would you suggest in place of the oat flour?
