Is bread dipping oil really a recipe

Well, to be honest, it is technically not a recipe because how hard can it be to add olive oil to some selection of herbs of choice and garlic. Let me say I am just showing you a simple way to impress and entertain your guest with my simple homemade bread dipping recipe.

Bread dipping oil are usually served with crusty bread in Italian restaurants as a starter or sharing platter or as restaurant complements, to start you off while still deciding on the menu. It can be easily replicated at home because it is quick, easy and can be easily customized to taste.

While olive oil dip can be made with fresh herbs, I prefer to make it with selections of dried herbs and spices. That way, it keeps well for days.

I used the following selection of dry herbs but remember this can be made yours. I do have an exception for rosemary in this recipe. Feel free to use it if you prefer.

Oregano

Thyme

Red pepper flakes

Fresh garlic: sub for garlic powder or roasted garlic for a more subtle flavor.

Salt and black pepper

Balsamic vinegar

Freshly grated parmesan cheese: substitute for pecorino

How to make bread dipping oil at home from scratch

To a shallow bowl, add olive oil, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, thyme, salt and pepper and mix to combine. Leave for at least 30 minutes for the flavor to develop. You can serve the dipping oil without parmesan cheese or balsamic vinegar.

To take this infused olive oil a notch further, add balsamic vinegar, grated parmesan cheese and stir to combine. These two additional ingredients give the oil an instant boost in flavor and can be served immediately.

Tips

  • Use the highest quality cold press extra virgin olive oil you can find
  • If using fresh herbs, make sure it is finely chopped. It gives a pleasing look to the eyes this way and will coat the bread easily too.
  • While dipping oil is quick and easy to make, it is best to make just the oil and herbs ahead of use so the oil is infused before serving. Any other ingredients you may want to add can be added just before serving.
  • Slice the baguette or ciabatta into smaller pieces before serving to avoid cross-contamination or food wastage.
  • A little jar of bread dipping oil is a great gift idea to give family and friends at thanksgiving or any other holiday. It will also make a great flavour at parties too.

How to store

Make the olive oil and dried herbs ahead for more infused flavour. You can store for up to 1 week or longer in a clean jar. Place in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Garlic powder can be added if making ahead. Avoid using freshly grated garlic when making ahead.
