Once again there were some fairly slow days this week on General Hospital, but a lot of great conversations and more character development. Some characters though seem to have undergone some radical shifts. The end of the week set up next week’s explosive drama, and everything could be about to come crashing down around Ava!

Ava’s Got Secrets! Dirty Ones!

Ava’s been playing with fire, and sooner or later she’s going to get burned. First, supporting Nina’s thinking that selling The Metro Court to Jason, just so he can give it back to Carly, would score points with Sonny was downright shady of Ava! And Friday, Nina finally seemed to realize Ava’s duplicity when Sonny exploded on Carly right after she revealed Jason got her the hotel back, calling her, Jason, and Nina all traitors. Next week Nina calls Ava out for playing her, and it should be good. Ava better hope she can talk her way out of this, or Nina might take her down. What’s even more interesting is that in the latest General Hospital spoilers, Nina’s going to Carly with concerns! Could Carly and Nina end up putting their hatred aside to figure out what Ava’s been up to with Sonny? That would be something, and as I discuss below, a lot of the characters are currently not acting like themselves…

So what is going on with Ava? Actually, what is going on with a lot of the characters on the show? It seems with the new head writing team in place they’ve decided to give many character’s personality transplants. For example, I like Nina, and I know she’s not perfect, but it seems like she’s become even more pathetic and spiteful than ever in this quest to get Sonny back. Now hopefully she sees that’s not going to happen. She’s not the only one acting off though.

Back to Ava, she came across two major secrets this week, but only told one to Sonny, that Dex was becoming a cop. She neglected to tell him his bipolar dosage had been off. Why? Does she think if he was on the right dosage that he’d forgive Nina? That maybe he wouldn’t be cutting Carly, Jason, Michael and everyone else out of his life? That he’d show her the curb? What are Ava’s motives? Why is she so willing to betray and lose her one and only real friend in Nina over Sonny of all people?

I am enjoying that the show is keeping us guessing on what is going on in Ava’s head. However there is something Ava seems to be forgetting, or maybe the writers are keeping this tidbit for the right time. Now that Nina knows Ava’s been playing her for a fool over Sonny, what’s stopping Nina from dropping the bomb on Sonny, Carly and others that Ava knew she turned Carly and Drew into the SEC from the beginning, and was even the one to give her the initial idea! Even though Carly isn’t his favorite person right now, Sonny likely won’t like that she too kept secrets from him. She’ll become just one more person who betrayed him.

Cyrus Takes Down Sonny, With Some Help

Viewers were quick to call Anna and Laura out for their sudden “aha” moment after decades of what, delusion? Their discussion about how they ignored Sonny’s darker side for so long because Luke was his friend, Robin loves him, he donates to the hospital and he is charming was ridiculously over the top. They knew what he did and let it slide! But now because he beat up “an old defenseless man” (a line viewers wish would be dropped) and put a hit out on someone, they’ve seen the light! Please, Sonny’s done far worse things in the past.

Again, brain or personality transplants? Or just one of those “just don’t question it and go with it” soap moments? Some viewers aren’t hating this turn of events, as they’ve long wanted the citizens of Port Charles to see Sonny for who he is. Of course, then there is the other half of the audience who sees Sonny as a quasi-hero, keeping drugs and all other crime out of Port Charles, just as Anna noted on Friday in her conversation with Molly. In the end, when it comes out Valentin screwed with Sonny’s meds, it might be him and not Sonny going to jail, because Sonny can, “Blame it on the al al al alcohol.” Er, I mean his meds.

Even though Cyrus gave Anna a statement, she’s choosing to sit on it until the time is right. I’m assuming this likely has something to do with Pikeman, as she knows Sonny had dealings with them in the past. Maybe she wants to bring down two birds with one stone? However, she did bring Molly in on the case, letting her read both Cyrus and Dex’s statements, and wanting her to prosecute Sonny when the time is right. Anna didn’t seem to care that Molly had a conflict of interest, what with Sonny’s daughter Kristina being her sister and carrying her child right now. The whole thing was a bit laughable because everyone in Port Charles is one big walking contradiction and conflict of interest to some degree!

The albeit brief interaction between Dex and Cyrus at the station was a nice scene. It felt like they were in some way both closing the chapter of their lives that had to do with Sonny. But for once I agree with Joss on something, shocking I know! Sonny isn’t going to let Dex go unpunished. Now that Sonny knows Dex is becoming a cop, he will shut him up and even said so himself on Friday. Normally Joss’ preaching is like nails on a chalkboard, but I thought her speech to Anna about not bothering to hand her the flag from Dex’s coffin to her at his funeral, as they both will know Anna could have saved him from Sonny. Joss was on point for once.

Thoughts on This Week’s Other Stories…

Lucy’s “performance” on Home and Heart with Haven might have been the most cringy she’s ever been. She even managed to make Haven somewhat likable. However, I felt in part it was to bring up the topic of The Nurses Ball, as we are approaching that time of year again.

In last week’s column, I admitted to liking the sparks between Cates and Carly. Watching him joke around with her, and even give her his “digits” while at Bobbie’s was a cute scene. Michael and Joss teasing their mom was fun too, but Michael seems to be intent on watching out for his mom where Cates is concerned. And as I also noted last week, as fun as they are together, it won’t last once Carly learns Cates is the one who forced Jason to become an FBI informant, all to keep her from going to prison.

As I stated last week, it wouldn’t surprise me if Carly accepted Jason giving her back The Metro Court simply because it was Jason. And that’s pretty much what happened! So much for Carly doing it on her own…

Alexis’ appeal has led to her bowing out as Gregory’s plus one to the wedding, so now he and Tracy can sit next to one another and shmooze at Brook Lynn and Chase’s big event. Why though do I have this feeling there won’t be a honeymoon, and Gregory will drop dead at the reception?

As if Nina and Drew’s office sex last week wasn’t bad enough, they gave us smooth-talking Brick and he’s oh so fly lines trying to impress Jordan. The whole scene made me feel like I needed a shower, and Jordan needs to listen to that voice in her head telling her, “What is wrong with me?”

They finally addressed the big elephant in the room which is Jason’s brand-new tattoo. He claimed realizing that he was alone, might never be able to return home, and thinking of all the people he’d lost, this was something that he’d never lose. Well, okay then. Moving on…

My final thought this week is once again… What about Austin? Are we ever going to find out who killed him and why? Won’t someone remember and think of poor Austin?

That’s it for my opinions on this week’s episodes. As always, leave yours in the comments!
